Om purnamadah purnamidam purnat purnamudacyate purnasya purnamadaya purnamevavasishyate Om santih santih That is Complete, This is Complete. From the Complete has evolved the Complete. Having evolved Complete from the Complete, the Complete yet remains Complete. AUM ! Peace, Peace, Peace.

Om Isavasyamidam sarvam yatkiñca jagatyam jagat tena tyaktena bhuñjitha ma grdhah kasyasvid dhanam (1) All this, whatever exists in the primordial world, is permeated by the Supreme Lord. (Therefore) accepting whatever is ordained by Him, enjoy. Covet not wealth which is ordained for others. kurvanneveha karmani jijivisecchatam samah evam tvayi nanyatheto'sti na karma lipyate nare (2) A man may wish to live for a hundred years, performing his duties as prescribed by the scriptures. O man, if you do your duties in this way, then the results of whatever you do will not cling to you. There is no other way. asurya nama te loka andhena tamasa'vrtah tamste pretyabhigacchanti ye ke catmahano janah (3) There are worlds known to be sunless and fit for demons. They are enveloped in darkness, such as what the blind [i.e., those devoid of Self-knowledge] experience. Those people who have neglected the attainment of Self-knowledge and have thus committed suicide, as it were, are doomed to enter those worlds after death.

anejadekam manaso javiyo nainaddeva apnuvanpurvamarsat taddhavato'nyanatyeti tisthattasminnapo matarisva dadha (4) Brahman, the Self, is one without a second, complete in itself. It never moves. It is always still, always the same, yet it moves faster than the mind. It is the power that moves everything, and it makes the whole world go the way it does. It gives power to the Lord of the universe, Matarisva (the Lord who dwells in space), who is responsible for the operation of the principle of cause and effect. tadejati tannaijati taddure tadvantike tadantarasya sarvasya tadu sarvasya bahyatah (5) That Brahman moves, and it does not move. It is far off, and it is also nearby. That [Brahman] is inside of this, and is also its outside.

yastu sarvani bhutanyatmanyevanupasyati sarvabhutesu catmanam tato na vijugupsate (6) One who sees all animate and inanimate nature in the Supreme (for He exists outside them and is their support), and also sees the Supreme in all of them (for He exists in them, and is their controller from within), by this reason, he becomes free of fear and does not ever need to seek concealment. yasminsarvani bhutanyatmaivabhudvijanatah tatra ko mohah kah soka ekatvamanupasyatah (7) For one who clearly understands that all beings exist in the Supreme, and that He exists within all of them (as their controller), and who thus sees the unity of the Lord as existing (without change) everywhere, what could possibly cause delusion, or sorrow?

sa paryagacchukramakayamavranamasnaviram suddhamapapaviddham kavirmanisi paribhuh svayambhuryathatathyato'rthan vyadadhacchasvatibhyah samabhyah (8) He (the one who knows as previously described) attains the Lord who is completely free of sorrow, lacking the subtle body (of transmigration and rebirth), and the gross body (that is the cause of physical suffering), indeed is Himself the source of all purity anywhere, lacking any manner of contact with sin. That omniscient, self-sustaining Lord, the controller of all minds, has eternally created all entities (in an infinitude of cycles of Creation) in reality.

andham tamah pravisanti ye'vidyamupasate tato bhuya iva te tamo ya u vidyayam ratah (9) Those who mechanically perform sacrifices [avidya] go into a darkness that is like being blind. But those who merely worship gods and goddesses [vidya] go into a deeper darkness. anyadevahurvidyaya'nyadahuravidyaya iti susruma dhiranam ye nastadvicacaksire (10) We heard from the wise and judicious, who explained to us that the result of having the right knowledge is different from the result of condemning the wrong knowledge. Scholars say that the path of avidya [performing Agnihotri and other sacrifices] and the path of vidya [worshipping gods and goddesses] produce different results. Wise men confirm this. vidyam cavidyam ca yastadvedobhayam saha avidyaya mrtyum tirtva vidyaya'mrtamasnute (11) One who knows the correct knowledge, and also criticizes false knowledge, for him/her, by criticism of false knowledge (which causes suffering), he/she overcomes suffering, and by practice of correct knowledge (which causes enjoyment), he obtains mukti. He who is aware that both knowledge and ignorance should be pursued together, overcomes death through ignorance and obtains immortality through knowledge.

andham tamah pravisanti ye'sambhutimupasate tato bhuya iva te tamo ya u sambhutyam ratah (12) Into a blind darkness they enter who worship only the unmanifested prakriti; but into a greater darkness they enter who worship the manifested Hiranyagarbha. Those who worship the unmanifested [the causal state of the world] go into a darkness that is like being blind. But those who worship the manifested [the world we see around us] go into a deeper darkness. anyadevahuh sambhavadanyadahurasambhavat iti susruma dhiranam ye nastadvicacaksire (13) Scholars say that the worship of sambhuti [Hiranyagarbha] and asambhuti [Prakrti] produce different results. Wise men confirm this. sambhutim ca vinasam ca yastadvedobhayam saha vinasena mrtyum tirtva sambhutya'mrtamasnute (14) He who worships the unmanifested [asambhuti] and also the manifested [sambhuti] attains immortality by the unmanifested [asambhuti] and conquers death by the manifested [sambhuti]. He who knows that both the unmanifested prakriti and the manifested Hiranyagarbha should be worshipped together, overcomes death by the worship of Hiranyagarbha and obtains immortality through devotion to prakriti.

hiranmayena patrena satyasyapihitam mukham tat tvam pusannapavrnu satyadharmaya drstaye (15) The face of Truth is hidden by a shining disc. O Sun, the sustainer of life and everything in this world, please remove the disc so that I, a seeker of Truth, may see it. pusannekarse yama surya prajapatya vyuha rasmin samuha tejah yat te rupam kalyanatamam tat te pasyami yo'savasau purusah so'hamasmi (16) O Pusan the Omniscient, Ekarsi the Supreme Knowable, Yama the controller of all, Surya the effulgent and a destination for even the deities, Prajapatya a special destination for Brahma; extend the knowledge that is of my true nature, and also knowledge extrinsic to me, so that I may perceive that most auspicious form of yours.

vayuranilamamrtamathedam bhasmantam sariram Om krato smara krtam smara Om krato smara krtam smara (17) Now that death is coming, I pray that my life force may merge with the cosmic life force. Let this body be consigned to fire and reduced to ashes. Mind, think of all I have done throughout my life. Think of my deeds again and again.

agne naya supatha raye asman visvani deva vayunani vidvan yuyodhyasmajjuhuranameno bhuyistham te nama uktim vidhema (18) O Lord, as `Agni', you are verily the controller of the body, and even of the whole universe; lead us by the highest path to the wealth of liberation; you fully know all that we know, all the efforts we have made; remove from us the effects of past sinful acts that are causing bondage, thus we pray unto you with our fullest knowledge and devotion.
